I am one of the recipients for an artist in residency fellowship to work with Maxwell Museum and Chaco Culture National Historical Park collections at the Hibben Center at the University of New Mexico. The Maxwell Museum received an NEA funded grant for this project. Lea McChesney, PhD, Curator of Ethnology is the project leader. As a child I spent a lot of time camping in Chaco Canyon during the summer. I’m very excited to have access to both the Maxwell and CCNHP’s collections.
Astronomical elements at the site are of interest to me. The shapes of and patterns on Chacoan ceramics, along with the shapes of decorative objects will define a rich, new vocabulary for a series of works-on-paper. Having access to both collections at the Maxwell Museum and the Chaco Canyon Visitors Center will be an enriching experience.
